Marta Bastianelli takes the first win in Vila-Real

The phenomenal Italian star has won the Stage 2 of the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana 2018 (Castellò - Vila-real, 115 kms) after the third place yesterday in the opening stage won by Hannah Barnes. Marta Bastianelli could beat the British cyclist today in the bunch sprint taking the third win overall for the #YellowFluoOrange Team this season, after Chloe Hosking at the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under and at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Australia.

The stage proceeded regularly until the climb of Desiert de les Palmes (Cat. 1) where the peloton lost most of its pieces. A Dutch athlete tried a solo breakaway in the downhill a a first chasing group including Mayuko Hagiwara had a gap of about 30’‘. The solitary attacker lost her vantage and she has been taken by the main group, as well catched by a second peloton with Marta Bastianelli and Ane Santesteban in the flat section before entering in Vila-real. Marta started her long sprint at 150 meters from the finish and nobody could pass her; now she resists in the Top 3 of the General Classification. Tomorrow there will be the longest stage of this 2nd Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, 137 kms from Sagunto to Valencia.

Marta Bastianelli declared after the stage: “We raced so well!! The climb was hard and we have been perfect to stay in the front with the strongest athletes. We did a great job with Ane, and Mayuko was in the lead, then Anna came from behind tho help me really well for the sprint. Thanks to the team for this magnificient result”.
